To visit our inspiring province is to love our province. Cape Town city is a bustling melting pot of cultures,

Never mind the Western Cape, the West Coast is one of the most stunning regions you will find in all South Africa

.

Here, gorgeous little coastal towns, game farms, amazing wildlife experiences, natural wonders and more, come together beautifully. These awesome experiences are complemented by the chance to travel along a very special stretch of the Cape.

Personally, the West Coast and Cederberg regions remain my top travel destinations in and around Cape Town, and we’ve returned there several times in the past four years alone… including thrice last year! We just can’t seem to stay away from this beautiful, unique part of the Western Cape.

If you favour the sea, then seaside towns like Yzerfontein, Darling, Langebaan and Paternoster are made for you.

But, if you need to yield to nature’s magnetic pull, then head inland along the R364 and experience the amazing Cederberg Wilderness Area. This vast region is home to wonderful hikes, nature and wildlife, historic rock art to name only a few attractions.

The West Coast (and Cederberg Mountains) offer intrepid travellers the very best in terms of road trips, Cape scenery, preserved history and natural highlights, like Kraalbaai or Stadsaal Caves… But let’s not forget the quaint Cape food, hospitality and wine farms it also offers!

So, pack in your costume, hiking shoes and camera, and set off on your next great adventure to the Cape West Coast and Cederberg regions – I promise you won’t regret it!

With the Atlantic Ocean as its western border, the Cape West Coast boasts many pristine, sandy white beaches. Visit the unspoilt beaches of the West Coast. Explore the diverse flora and fauna of the West Coast while hiking up the beautiful mountains.

The Western Cape is situated on the south-western tip of the African continent. It is a region of folded mountains, well- watered valleys, wide beaches and breathtaking scenery. The cold Atlantic Ocean along the west coast is a rich fishing area, while the warmer Indian Ocean skirts its southern beaches.

Cape Town is a modern, cosmopolitan city surrounded by nature. Centred around Table Mountain, one of the New 7 Wonders of the world, the Mother City is known for its beautiful beaches, stunning biodiversity, award-winning food and wine, and sheer variety of experiences on offer.

A cape is a high point of land that extends into a river, lake, or ocean. Some capes, such as the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, are parts of large landmasses.

With such a varying landscape – found in very few other places across the globe – Cape Town offers forests, beaches, gardens, mountains, oceans, grasslands, nature reserves, Winelands, as well as one of the most unique floral biomes in the world – fynbos.

1. Let’s start with the name, Cape Town is nicknamed the ‘Mother City’

There are a number of suggested reasons by Cape Town is known as the Mother City. One of which is that it was hailed the mother city due to it being one of the first European settlements on the continent. Another suggestion is that in the 1930, a local newspaper referred to it as a ‘metropolis’ which is derived from the Greek words ‘metros’ (mother) and ‘polis’ (city) which the public enjoyed so much they used the description as a nickname.

Cape Town is also known as the Cape of Good Hope and was, at one point in history, known as the Cape of Storms.

Table Mountain is one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature

Excitingly, Cape Town’s iconic landmark is officially one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature! The mountain has its name due to its flat-topped shape and the clouds that settle across the mountain when the wind blows in a certain direction are known as the ‘table cloth’. Even more interestingly, the indigenous Khoisan people named it ‘Hoerikwaggo’ meaning ‘mountain in the sea’ which is an absolutely spot on description when you see it in person, too.

Besides its notable shape and name, another well-known aspect of Table Mountain is the cableway. The first cableway to the top opened on 4 October 1929 with the earliest cable cars carrying up to 25 people. The faster, rotating cable cars that we are familiar with today were first installed in 1997, with upgrades made consistently over the years. Nowadays, you can travel from the lower cable car station to the top in +-5 minutes, enjoying a 360 degree view as you go!

The Castle of Good Hope is the oldest colonial-era building in the country

Located on the corner of Darling Street and Buitenkant Street is the Castle of Good Hope. It was built by the Dutch East India Company between 1666 and 1679 and today is the oldest colonial-era building in the country. You can visit the castle to enjoy tours, see the military museum, admire the African Pottery Collection and even do a tunnel and dungeon tour!
